Can people seeking asylum volunteer in the UK?

Yes !

You can find the current guidance about volunteering for asylum seekers on the Home Office website here:

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/803596/permission-to-work-v8.0-ext.pdf

It states:

Volunteers are people who give their time for free to charitable or public sector organisations without any obligation.

Asylum seekers can volunteer for a charity, voluntary sector or public sector organisation (such as a school or hospital). They cannot volunteer for a private company.

Volunteers do not receive payment except for the re-payment of reasonable out-of-pocket expenses such as travel or food whilst volunteering.

Volunteering can be undertaken at any stage of the asylum process including after refusal.

If you want more information about volunteering there are volunteer centres in most local authority areas which offer help. Or contact us at info@refmentors.org.uk
